Working Groups are where most of the Network’s work actually happens. Each one pursues a particular goal that advances the Network’s mission, and each sets its own focus, membership, and way of working. New groups can form on their own when there’s energy for something new, and every Member Organization commits to taking part in at least one.
Most of our Working Groups are open to anyone interested, whether or not your institution has an OSPO or any plans to start one. A few set light membership criteria, which are noted on each group’s page.
Each Working Group designates a chair who represents it to the Alignment Group, the body that keeps the Network’s Working Groups coordinated and aligned with its mission. You can read more about how Working Groups fit into the Network’s structure on the Governance page.

Discovery: mapping the UC open source landscape; home of the Open Repository Browser (ORB) and the project showcase.
Sustainability Playbook: an online handbook for sustaining open source at UC, built from interviews with UC researchers.
OSS Licensing: clarifying and simplifying open source licensing guidance for UC.
Education: building a connected open source learning culture across UC, much of it through the UC Carpentries partnership.
UC Open Steering Committee: organizing the Network’s annual UC Open convening.
High Level Outreach: outreach to senior campus leadership to strengthen OSPO sustainability.
Joining a Working Group¶
You can join most Working Groups by joining the group’s channel in the Network Slack and introducing yourself. Pick a group whose work is closest to yours, or one whose work you want to learn more about. Each group’s page has the details.
